Session 17 -Simply synopsis: A stress-free method for synopsis creation.

Presenter: Michelle Somers
Member Level: Asp, Emg

Most authors would rather compose an 80k+ word novel than write a synopsis. The Simply Synopsis workshop uses a step-by-step strategy to pare a story down before building it back up, paragraph-by-paragraph, into synopsis form. The process is simple, systematic and straightforward, and is a fail-proof way to ensure all the vital elements that make a great story are present in the final product.

We’ll use examples of well-known books and movies to assist participants to relate the method back to their own synopsis creation.

Michelle Somers is an award-winning romantic suspense author. She’s a professional killer and matchmaker, a storyteller and a romantic. Words are her power and her passion. Her heroes and heroines always get their happy ever after, but she’ll put them through one hell of a journey to get there.

Michelle is treasurer of the Melbourne Romance Writers Guild, a member of Romance Writers of Australia and America, as well as Sisters in Crime and RWA America’s Kiss of Death chapter.

Her debut novel Lethal in Love won both the Valerie Parv Award and Romance Writers of America’s Indiana Golden Opportunities Award before publication and was snapped up by Penguin Random House after a pitch at Sydney’s 2014 RWA conference. It hit virtual bookstores in July 2015 as a serial ebook.

In 2016, Lethal in Love was re-released as a single ebook the same weekend it won RWA’s Romantic Book of the Year Award for long romance.

In the three years since Chris Taylor turned down a deal with one of the big 5, she’s written 19 romantic suspense books with over 100 000 paid downloads. In mid-2014 Rachel Amphlett sold Italian rights to her indie pubbed debut thriller and at the beginning of 2015 saw sales into six figure downloads of her breakout romantic suspense novel.

Come and listen to three hugely successful Australian indie authors talk business. What worked, what didn’t and everything in between.

Clare Connelly writes category romance and self-published her first title in 2014. Another 42 individual titles and seven anthologies followed of which she has over 500,000 paid downloads. Much of her success came from Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program where she has frequently been awarded an all-star award for being in the top 100 Amazon exclusive authors in the U.S, and in the top fifteen Amazon exclusive authors in the UK for sixteen months in a row. Clare has recently signed a two book deal with Harlequin Presents but plans to also continue with her indie career.

Chris Taylor writes romantic suspense novels. In 2013 she turned down a deal with a Big 5 publisher, was a Golden Heart finalist and won The Emerald award. She also decided to go indie. Three years later she had 19 novels to her name, has sold more than 100 000 copies of her books and earns a six figure income. Being an indie author has not only allowed her to be a fulltime author, but it has given her complete control over everything – from the books she chooses to write, to the covers, to the titles and release dates.

Rachel Amphlett writes in the thriller and romantic suspense genres. After an email in mid-2014 saw her leasing the worldwide Italian rights to her debut thriller she took a long hard look at her indie publishing business. Six months later, and with an overhauled back catalogue of three novels the start to 2015 saw sales into six figure downloads. During 2015, Rachel published three more thrillers. She undertakes extensive research into market trends and new technology in relation to the business side of her writing, and continues to exploit her work to include audio books and foreign rights.
