Roadshows – Reaching out to our far-flung members

Romance Writers of Australia holds romance writing roadshows around the country from time to time.

Currently, we are in planning for 2019/20, so watch this space.

A History of Roadshows

From A Fine Romance, RWA’s 20th Anniversary Commemorative Magazine

With the majority of RWA’s membership on the eastern seaboard of Australia, sheer weight of numbers meant that, in past years, RWA’s conferences were confined to Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

In 2007, our executive looked at ways of addressing the conference needs of our more far-flung members, those who would have to travel every year (if they could make it at all) to conference.

In April 2008 the inaugural RWA Roadshow travelled to Adelaide and then to Perth. Held on consecutive weekends, each featured a full day mini-conference followed by a celebratory dinner. Anne Gracie and Marion Lennox joined Trish Morey in the first ever Romance Roadshows, where they delivered the RWA conference experience to around 100 eager attendees. The mood was vibrant; feedback was positive. RWA’s Romance Roadshows had hit the spot.

Perth embraced the roadshow concept with a local committee organising one-day seminars sponsored by RWA in 2009 and 2010. A local committee, in conjunction with the South Australian Romance Authors (SARA), hosted a second Adelaide event in 2010. In 2011 the Roadshow travelled to Far North Queensland for a very successful mini-conference featuring Barbara Hannay, Helene Young, Kelly Hunter, and Anne Gracie. In 2012, Tasmania had their turn.

Romance Roadshows are the next best thing to being at conference, so if you’re in a far-flung Aussie location and interested in bringing this event to your town, feel free to drop a line to suggesting your location.
