Five reasons to narrate your own short story by Renee Conoulty

  1. Voice is an important part of your brand. When people hear your voice, they feel like they know you on a deeper level. This will help build their trust in you and increase their likelihood of buying from you.
  2. If you're thinking about narrating a full-length audiobook, it's a great idea to start off with a short story. A shorter piece will give you a chance to practice narrating, editing and mastering before you commit your time to a larger project. The process is the same, no matter the length.
  3. You can make it sound how you intended when you wrote it. When you read your own story, you can put the emphasis on the correct words. You know how to pronounce your characters names properly.
  4. If you narrate your own story, you own all the intellectual property rights and can do whatever you like with it. You can sell it and keep all the royalties. You can give it away to your fans. You are in control.
  5. You can do it for free. As a writer, you already own a laptop. The software I use is all free. If you want to narrate a full-length audiobook, I’d advise purchasing a USB microphone but if your focus is to produce a short story audio for you fans, you can simply use the earbuds with a built-in microphone that came with your smartphone or the built-in laptop microphone. The sound quality won’t be as professional but think of it as a selfie rather than a portrait. There are a time and place for both.

In the upcoming Narrated by the Author OWL, I’ll take you step-by-step through the process of creating a professional quality MP3 audio file of one of your short stories/excerpts. These skills will transfer directly to other audio projects such as full-length audiobooks or podcasts. Audiobooks are the fastest-growing segment of the publishing industry and this course will help you get a piece of the action. Book your place now.
