Show, Don’t Tell. It’s an adage we’ve all heard, in some form or other, during our time as a writer.
But what does it actually mean?
I promise you now, you’re not the first person to ask that question. It’s a pretty ambiguous statement, and over my years in writing I’ve heard a lot of different answers - which, of course, only serves to elevate confusion.
Whether you’re an author beginning your journey, someone starting to find their feet or a writer with thirty books and decades of experience, I’m sure you’ve suffered from the confusion associated with this concept at least once.
Well, guess what?
You’re not alone.
In fact, you’re normal!
Now that we’ve established that everyone struggles with this process from time to time, I’m here to say that your confusion doesn’t have to last forever. I’ve spent a long time immersing myself in the values of showing over telling, and I wrote this course after several writerly friends asked for my help in clarifying the topic and then demanded to know why I hadn’t offered my knowledge sooner.
So... here we are!
Over the weeks of The Secrets of Show, Don’t Tell, we’ll cover what both showing and telling are, how they’re different and how they factor into your author’s journey. I’ll show you how to isolate telling in your own work, and we’ll work together to uplevel that telling into something sparkly and magical. Once that’s done, we’ll cover how both showing and telling relate to your editing process, and the almost as mystifying concept of deep point of view. I’ll also share my own, personal processes in terms of uplevelling telling into showing, which you can either adopt - or adapt - to suit your own writing lifestyle.
This will be a supported journey, with me beside you every step of the way, and is suitable for everyone, no matter where you are in your writing life. I highly encourage questions and discussion, and will provide examples and exercises that will help you not only learn about showing and telling in the short term, but are simple enough to be repeated long term, when you need a refresher on the topic.
Finally, we’ll have a laugh and share some quality time together (cue cheesy smile) as I’m a big believer in the concept that learning should be fun! Hopefully I’ll see you there.
Cheers,
Sammy
